Filming day 5
On Sunday we had planned to complete our filming in the woods however due to the weather, and the continuity issues because of it, we had to change the plans and so we decided to film at Tayla's. We got all of the mirror shots done which involves Tayla looking at her reflection in two mirrors. We thought Tayla reflection beaming out of two mirrors would be effective as it would hint to the audience the different sides to Tayla. We set up two cameras and so were able to get a variety of shots. Tara was able to edit the shots to give them the effect we want them to have. Below are some pictures of the shots.

Banks 'Brain' music video
My group and I have decided to have a few shots of Tayla in a circle during the music video. We were inspired after watching the music video "Brain' by the singer Banks. We have decided to do this as we think it will make the music video look professional and it will create 'Star Image' (a theory by Richard Dyer). Below is the music video.

Creative Decision Making
In Fridays lesson my group and I were looking over our footage and playing around with the opacity on iMovie as we want the music video to be mainly black and white with the only colour being from the protagonists red cape. This was proving to be difficult as we couldn't match the colouring of the different shots up. We were also finding it hard to change only the colour of the cape and nothing else as the cape wasn't going the right colour. We are hoping to resolve this problem in Wednesdays lesson as we think that the contrast of the red cape and the black and white will be very effective.

Filming day 4
My group and I began filming in our third location today, which was at Tayla's house, to get some indoor shots. We want a monochrome colour palette, which would conform to Indie music videos, and so Tara has edited the shots to give them the effect we want. Below are some images of the filming day.

These two shots show the protagonist (left) and the antagonist (right).
The shot on the left shows the protagonist nervously looking out of the window. We want this to show her worry at what the future holds and her nerves at moving on. The shot on the right however shows the protagonist curled up by the wall. The shadows in this shot are meant to portray the protagonists disoriented state.
Here the protagonist is being watched by the antagonist. This symbolises that the protagonist feels overwhelmed by the past and is struggling to move on as the past and her demons are always with her.

Group Vlog on changes to the music video
This week my group has made several changes to our music video. After attempting the projection shots several times my group decided to put some studio shots in place of this. We have also decided to stray from the forest scenes and focus more on studio shots to portray the protagonists internal conflict. However we are still keeping the red riding hood shots as we want to keep some of our original idea about fairytales. We are also keeping the idea of 'escapism' and so we feel that the forest shots will emphasise this. Below is a quick vlog of our changes.

Music video Storyline change
During Fridays lesson my group and I were going over the different ideas we have for our music video as we felt that the storyline we had so far was a little boring. After many failed ideas Tayla came up with the idea to have the music video start with a male character shouting at the female protagonist and then have this male character recurring throughout the rest of the music video. The female character would still be in the forest for part of the music video as a way to escape this person. We all really liked this idea as it kept to our original idea about escapism and also meant that we could keep the forest shots that we have already filmed. I think this idea will be effective as it will leave it ambiguous to the audience to work out who this man is. The audience can decide if this man is a past boyfriend or if he represents the protagonists struggles with herself.

Projection complications
In the lesson today my group and I had a discussion about our idea of projecting leaves off of Tayla as we have tried many ways of executing it but all our ways have failed. Our main problem is we can't get rid of the background as we want the leaves to just project off of Tayla and the background to be clear. We mentioned a few ideas of what we could do instead of this idea including using water (as water is a recurring factor in many indie music videos), oil, paint and food colouring. We are hoping to get our hands on some of these products by the end of the week so we can try out our other ideas.

Digipak
In Wednesdays lesson we learnt about digital packs (digipaks) and why they have been such a convenient option as opposed to a standard jewel case packaging.
What is a digipak?
A digital pack is a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs.
Digipaks are usually 139.5mmX6mmX125.5mm
Digipaks can be more popular as...
-They are more ecologically friendly
-They are more compact
-They are easier to maintain
-They are more movable
-They are virtually shatterproof
-It makes it look more premium
The Genetic conventions on a digipak are

Don't look now trailer
Below is the trailer for the film 'Don't look now' which my group has been recommended to watch. After watching the trailer I can see that the colour palette is similar to the one my group and I want to use for our music video as the trailer is mainly black and white with splashes of colour which is what my group are aiming for. A similarity between our music video and this trailer is the only bright colour in them is the Red coat. My group and I have decided to do this to draw attention to the protagonist as red symbolises danger which shows that trouble is to come. This could possibly be the reason why the film has decided to do this as well.

Green screen shooting
This mornings plan was to go to Hilly fields and finish the outside shots for the music video but due to the rain we had to go with plan B which was to come into school and film the inside shots with the green screen.
We decided to pin the green screen up from the ceiling and then have Tayla standing behind it with the projector projecting the picture we have of leaves onto her. We had some difficulty with pinning the green screen up so we decided to use the piece of wire (picture to the right) we found in the cupboard to hook it from one end of the room to another. We then realised that the wire wasn't long enough so we hunted the school for something long and strong enough to hold the green screen up. We borrowed a piece of wire from Art but realised that the green screen (picture to the right) didn't have holes in it length ways (The only holes were width ways) to pin it up so therefore their wouldn't have been anywhere that we could pin it up (as it wouldn't have been long enough to reach the two hooks.) We decided to ask if we could use photographys green screen (left bottom photo), which they kindly lent to us. This made it easier as it stood on its own. After three hours of trying we finally got the shots that we needed. We then uploaded it all onto the computer and started to edit (right bottom photo .)

The Rule of Thirds and The Golden Ratio
The Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs.
The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. The main reason for observing the rule of thirds is to discourage placement of the subject at the centre, or prevent a horizon from appearing to divide the picture in half.
When filming or photographing people, it is common to line the body up to a vertical line and the person's eyes to a horizontal line. If filming a moving subject, the same pattern is often followed, with the majority of the extra room being in front of the person (the way they are moving). Likewise, when photographing a still subject who is not directly facing the camera, the majority of the extra room should be in front of the subject (leading space) with the vertical line running through their perceived centre of mass.
Below is a video explaining the rule of thirds...
The Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio is found in architecture, paintings, sculptures and even music. An impressive array of infinite uniformity is all around us, and human kind has intuitively cued into this harmony through the arts as our own way of reflecting and resonating with the divine.

Framing and Composition
In the lesson today we went through Framing and Composition. We went through a few things that are vital for when we film. For example we learnt that when you centralise an object you draw attention to it. We also learnt about the rule of thirds. The rule of third states that you should put objects of interest where the line intersects, or where the lines meet at a point.
We also learnt that the eyes should be kept in a position roughly 1/3 of the way down and they shouldn't drop below the central line unless for a specific reason.
Leading space is also something we learnt about. Leading space is when the object is slightly to the side. Leading space should always be in the direction the person is looking.
Finally we learnt about the golden spiral and that it is something leading the eye to the central of the composition.

Mac 5's Music Video Questionnaire
As well as the survey monkey questionnaire, my group and I decided to make a video questionnaire to get more peoples opinions on Music Videos. We are currently looking through all of the feedback and will try to incorporate it into our music video. Below is the questionnaire...
Survey Monkey Questionnaire
Over the past week my group and I have been thinking of questions to ask people in a questionnaire. We are making a questionnaire to learn peoples opinions on music and to hear what sort of music videos they enjoy watching. We took inspiration from the quiz we took on Young and Rubicam's model. Below is a picture of our questionnaire...

Young and Rubicam's Psychographics model
Maslow, Young and Rubicam
In the lesson today my group and I researched Dr Maslow's model 'The Hierarchy of Needs' and Young and Rubicam's 'psychographics model.'
Hierarchy of needs
Young and Rubicam's Psychographics model was based upon Dr. Abraham Maslow's study of monkeys in which he found monkeys always made sure they weren’t thirsty
before looking for shelter, and always
ensured they had shelter before they looked for love
and companionship. Dr Maslow then went on to study the human beings
around him. He found out that Humans acted in much the same way. No Human worried about love before they felt secure and no Human sought control before they felt respected
by their peers. Dr Maslow decided to call his work 'The Hierarchy of Needs.'
Young and Rubicam's 4C's:
Young and Rubicam took this Hierarchy, and designed a
probing research tool to find out where people stood
within it. They decided to call their model the 'Cross Cultural consumer characterisation (or for short 'The 4c's'). The result was a segmentation system powerful enough
to segment all mankind, and deep enough to understand
all mankind’s basic motivations. Because Young and Rubicam also asked what brands
people bought and how they felt about them, the
system also became a way of understanding the deeper
appeals of those brands. The system accepted that people from different countries
were influenced by their differing cultural backgrounds,
and removed the effect of those backgrounds. There are seven
different categories in the 4C's. They are...
THE EXPLORER
They seek discovery.
These people are driven by a need for discovery and challenge. Explorers are often the first to try out new ideas and experiences. They respond to brands that offer new sensations, indulgence and instant effects.
These people are driven by a need for discovery and challenge. Explorers are often the first to try out new ideas and experiences. They respond to brands that offer new sensations, indulgence and instant effects.
THE ASPIRER
THE SUCCEEDER
They seek Control
These people possess self-confidence and have a strong goal
orientation. They tend to be very organised.
When it comes to brands, they seek reward and prestige, and will often seek out the best, because that is what they feel they deserve. On the other hand, they also seek out caring and protective brands – their aggressive attitude to life means they need to relax occasionally.
THE REFORMER
They seek Enlightenment
Reformers are the most anti-materialistic of the seven groups, and are often perceived as intellectual. They are socially aware, and pride themselves on tolerance. Reformers seek out the authentic and the harmonious, and are often at the leading edge of society. However, unlike Explorers, they will not buy things just because they are new.
THE MAINSTREAM
They seek Security
These are people who live in the world of the domestic and the everyday. A daily routine is fundamental to the way they live their lives. Their life choices are ‘we’ rather than ‘me’. As their name implies, they are the mainstream of society. They are the largest group of people within 4C's across the world. They respond to big established brands, to ‘family’ brands and to offers of value for money.
THE STRUGGLER
They seek Escape
Strugglers live for today, and make few plans for tomorrow. Others often see them as victims, losers and wasters - aimless, disorganised people with few resources apart from their own physical skills. If they get on in life, it will depend more on a winning lottery ticket than anything they do themselves. They are heavy consumers of alcohol and junk food. Visual impact and physical sensation are an important element of their brand choices.
THE RESIGNED
They seek Survival
These are predominantly older people with constant, unchanging values built up over time. For them, the past is bathed in a warm nostalgic glow. They respect institutions and enjoy acting in traditional roles. Their brand choices are driven by a need for safety and for economy. They choose above all what is familiar to them.
They seek Status
These people are Materialistic and acquisitive and are driven by others’ perceptions of them rather than by their own values. As a result, they respond to what others perceive as being superficial: image, appearance, persona, charisma and fashion. These people believe that an attractive pack is as important as its contents.

Filming day 2 video
Below is a short video of our day 2 of filming. We didn't get as many backstage pictures and videos this time as we were more focused on the actual filming for the music video as we didn't want to repeat the first day of filming where we didn't get as much done as we'd hoped. This time however we got a lot more filming done although we still have a lot more to go.

Filming day 2
Today, my group and I went back to hilly fields to film for our music video. We were hoping to finish filming today but, again, due to it becoming dark at 4 we had to finish filming sooner than hoped. We also didn't film as much as we'd hoped due to straying from the storyboards. Next time when we film we need to make sure that we follow the storyboards so we get all the shots that we need. We decided to use two cameras at the same time so we could get a variety of different shots. It took a little bit of time positioning ourselves and the cameras to make sure that me, Rhianne, Tara and both cameras were out of the others shot but we eventually managed to. The shots we got hopefully are useful and will make our patience all worth while.

Shooting schedule
At the end of yesterdays lesson my group and I listed all the days and times we were free to film. From this information we have made a shooting schedule which we hope we will stick to. We have also listed the props and equipment that we will need to bring on the day. Below is a picture of the schedule.

Video of our location visit
Today my group and I have been on our music video location. After an hour of looking for each other we all found each other and explored the location. We had decided to film today but due to the weather we decided to use the day as a Recce and see the locations so when we go back to film we can go straight to the locations without any hassle. Below is a video blog of our day

Storyboarding animatic
My group and I have finally finished our animatic. We have an idea of the duration of our shots and the camera angles we want to use however we know that small changes (or big ones) may be made when it comes to filming and editing our music video. Below is the animatic.

Storyboarding completed
My group and I finally finished storyboarding for our music video. We decided to draw the shots on post-it notes so if anything needed to be changed it could be done so efficiently. It filming is anything like last year then the storyboards will be very helpful when filming as it will give us direction in which shots we need to film which will mean less time filming and more time editing. Tara was very kind to put all the pages in order and take a picture which is shown below. We are currently in the process of deciding how to film our animatic which will hopefully be finished soon.

Empty Gold and Take shelter mix
During todays lesson my group and I were looking up videos that we could use as inspiration for our music video. We came across the video 'Take Shelter' by the music group 'Years and Years.' We really liked some of the effects used in the music video so we put the Empty Gold audio over the Take Shelter video to see if the visuals suited our song. We were surprised with how many links their were between the videos therefore this is definitely a music video we can take inspiration from. Below is our Empty Gold and Take Shelter mix.

Storyboarding
In Wednesdays lesson we carried on storyboarding for our music video. At the moment we have got a rough idea of how we want the beginning to be but we are still trying to figure out how the middle and end will go. We have a few ideas, for example leaves being projected onto the protagonists body, but we're not sure yet at what part of the music video it will go.

Lip syncing vlog
During Fridays lesson we presented our Lip singing video to the rest of the class. I found it very easy to see when we were actually singing and when we were only mouthing the words as it didn't look very realistic when we were not singing, therefore for future reference I think we should always sing along, no matter how bad we may sound.

Mac 5 lip sync practice
This weeks task was to create a video of our group having a go at lip singing the words to our song Empty Gold. Although it was very fun to film we learnt how long it takes to film and hard it is to get the lip singing to match up with the song.
I found when I was actually singing the song it looked a lot more realistic then when I just mouthed the words so therefore when we come to film our music video I think our main protagonist, Tayla, should actually sing along with the song instead of just mouthing the words.

Song Permission
In Fridays lesson we had to email the producer of Halsey 'Empty Gold' asking permission to use the song for our music video. As we have no intention of selling the finished product we thought it highly unlikely that their would be any problem using it but we thought it would be best to email the producer to be on the safe side as we didn't want their to be any copyright issues. We emailed them from Rhinannes media email.
Here is a photo of our email. As we wanted the email to be perfect we spend a lot of time changing it around.
We had some difficulty sending the email, as we had typed the email address incorrectly, which made us all stressed.

Interesting Music video
Tayla came across the music video 'Cigarette Daydream' by 'Cage the Elephant' when looking for an interesting music video. After she showed it to me and the rest of our group we all agreed that we loved how their is an intro before the music plays to explain the narrative of the video. We also loved the fact that some off the video was in black and white as it made the video more mysterious and dark. We are thinking of having some of our music video in black and white so we could definitely take inspiration from this.

Treatment pitch
In Fridays lesson my group and I delivered our treatment pitch. Overall I felt it went well as from the feedback other class members gave us people had said they generally liked our idea. We also read through the constructive criticism we got which was very helpful. Below are videos of our treatment pitch and our group response to the treatment pitch and audience feedback. I have also put a photo of our audience feedback below too.

Song analysis
In the lesson today we were looking over our annotations of 'Empty Gold' and 'Beggin for thread'. Although we previously made the decision to chose 'Empty Gold' we were having doubts as we also had a lot of ideas for 'Begggin for thread'. We finally decided to stick with our decision of 'Empty Gold' as we thought that the ideas we had for 'Beggin for thread' could be incorporated with our ideas for 'Empty Gold'. Below are our annotations of the two songs.

Halsey's Empty Gold lyrics
My group and I chose the song Empty Gold because we thought that we had more ideas about how to create our music video than with any other of the songs. Below are the lyrics to Empty Gold...
I, I must confess
How hard I tried to breathe
Through the trees of loneliness.
And you, you must confess
How hard you need to see
Through the heart beating out my chest.
Feel like we've been falling down
Like these autumn leaves.
But baby don't let winter come,
Don't let our hearts freeze.
If the morning light don't steal our soul,
We will walk away from empty gold.
Dark as midnight sun,
Smoke as black as charcoal
Fills into our fragile lungs.
Cause when our demons come,
Dancing in the shadows,
To a game that can't be won.
Feel like we've been falling down
Like these autumn leaves.
But baby don't let Winter come,
Don't let our hearts freeze.
If the morning light don't steal our soul,
We will walk away from empty gold.
If the morning light don't steal our soul,
We will walk away from empty gold.
We're the underdogs in this world alone
I'm a believer, got a fever running through my bones.
We're the alley cats and they can throw their stones
They can break our hearts, they won't take our souls.
We're the underdogs in this world alone
I'm a believer, got a fever running through my bones.
We're the alley cats and they can throw their stones
They can break our hearts, they won't take our souls.
If the morning light don't steal our soul,
We will walk away from empty gold.
If the morning light don't steal our soul,
We will walk away from empty gold.
We will walk away from empty gold.

Mac 5's first vlog!
In todays lesson my group and I finally decided on our music video which is Empty gold by Halsey. After annotating 4 different songs that we were deciding upon we finally made the decision to chose empty gold as we had more ideas on where to go with the music video than with the other 3 songs.
We are now working towards our treatment pitch which we will present next Friday. Below is a vlog explaining more about our song and why we chose it.

As my group and I are doing the Indie Genre I have been doing a lot of research about it to learn the age genre and gender indie music is mostly listened by. From researching online I found that Indie music is mostly listened by 15-24 year old males. To back these statistics up I created a questionnaire to see who listens to indie music. I asked 2 people from each gender from 7 different age groups. My results are below...
Questionnaire:
Do you listen to Indie music?
Females:
10-15- 0/2
16-20- 2/2
21-25-1/2
26-30-1/2
31-40- 1/2
41-60- 0/2
61+- 0/2
Males:
10-15- 1/2
16-20- 2/2
21-25-2/2
26-30-1/2
31-40- 1/2
41-60- 1/2
61+- 0/2
From my results it is evident that Indie music is mainly popular within males as out of the 14 males I asked 8 males said they listened to Indie music whereas only 5 females said they listen to Indie. It is also apparent that Indie music is mostly listened by people aged 16-25 as out of the 13 people that said they listened to Indie music 7 of the people were in the categories 16-20 and 21-25. This means that when my group and I come to make our music video our target audience will be around this age range. However, although males on average listen to Indie music more, we want to direct our music video mainly at the female gender by using females in our video. As a group we feel that their aren't enough female Indie singers out there and so want to challenge the idea that Indie is mainly liked by males by getting females involved.

Banks's music videos
In the lesson my group and I continued looking for a song for our music video. We came across the singer Banks and found two of her songs 'Goddess' and "beggin for thread' which we thought could both be songs used for our music video. After printing the lyrics and annotating them we decided not to use 'Goddess" because of the amount of profanity in the song. Below is the lyrics to both songs...
Goddess...
Goddess...
She gave it all, you gave her shit
She coulda done, just anything
Or anyone, cause she's a goddess
You never got this
You put her down, you liked her hopeless
To walk around, feeling unnoticed
You shoulda crowned her, cause she's a goddess
You never got this
Now you gotta deal with this glitch on your shoulder
Fucking with a goddess and you get a little colder
Yea it's colder, colder
Fucking with a goddess, and you get a little colder
Finally surfaced above doubts
Feeling above this, she came around
Cause she's a goddess, finally saw this
And now you're back, trying to claim her
Cause she's gone and now without her
You're all alone, cause she's a goddess
You shoulda saw this
Now you gotta deal with this glitch on your shoulder
Fucking with a goddess and you get a little colder
Yea it's colder, colder
Fucking with a goddess, and you get a little colder
[x2]
Now you gotta deal with this glitch on your shoulder
You're fucking with a goddess and you get a little colder
Yea you're colder, colder
You're fucking with a goddess, and you get a little colder
Beggin for thread...
So I got edges that scratch
And sometimes I don't got a filter
But I'm so tired of eating all of my misspoken words
I know my disposition gets confusing
My disproportionate reactions fuse with my eager state
That's why you wanna come out and play with me
Yeah
Why
Why
Why
Stooped down and out
You got me beggin for thread
To sew this hole up that you ripped in my head
Stupidly think you had it under control
Strapped down to something that you don't understand
Don't know what you were getting yourself into
You should have known
Secretly, I think you knew
I got some dirt on my shoes
My words can come out as a pistol
And I'm no good at aiming
But I can aim it at you
I know my actions, they may get confusing
But my unstable ways is my solution to even space
That's why you wanna come out and play with me, yeah
Stooped down and out
You got me beggin for thread
To sew this hole up that you ripped in my head
Stupidly think you had it under control
Strapped down to something that you don't understand
Don't know what you were getting yourself into
You should have known
Secretly, I think you knew
(Secretly I think you knew)
Hold it out, whoa
Try to hide it out but my tracks are better
Hold it out, whoa
Try to hide it out but my tracks are better
Hold it out, whoa
Try to hide it out but my tracks are better
Hold it out, whoa
Try to hide it out but my tracks are better
Stooped down and out
You got me beggin for thread
To sew this hole up that you ripped in my head
Stupidly think you had it under control
Strapped down to something that you don't understand
Don't know what you were getting yourself into
You should have known
Secretly, I think you knew
(Secretly I think you knew)
We are still considering `beggin for thread' along with some songs from Halsey. We will hopefully have decided a song by the end of the week.

Music video song possibility
In todays lesson my group and I discussed what song we wanted to do for our music video. One of the songs that we have come up with is 'Hurricane' by Halsey. We found this song very interesting and thought it would be perfect for our music video. Below is the song.

MTV music awards 2015
On the 30th August 2015 the MTV music awards took place. It was very interesting to watch all of the music videos and to see the singers hoping that their music video(s) won an award. Below is a list of the winners...

As a media student about to create a music video I couldn't help paying particular attention to the Video of the year award. After making the preliminary exercise music video I have realised how much time it takes to make one and so for the quality of them all to be amazing is awe inspiring. If my group and I could make a music video half as good as any one of these I would be a very happy media student. In the end Taylor Swifts music video 'Bad Blood' won although I'm sure it was a close call as they are all fantastic videos.
